As part of the government initiative to modernise NHS Staff login, the latest announcement from NHSX highlights that £40 million will be invested to help hospitals and clinics transform slow NHS staff login times within the next year, significantly reducing time and cost of signing into multiple IT systems. Leading NHS identity and authentication provider, Isosec, is already helping Trusts address this challenge with its NHS purpose built Single Sign On solution.

Back to basics

Whilst there are numerous challenges to streamlining NHS technology, getting these basic things right such as true Single Sign On (SSO) and multi factor authentication like Virtual Smartcard are essential to laying the right foundations for NHS IT. Matt Hancock, Health Secretary, commented “It is frankly ridiculous how much time our doctors and nurses waste logging on to multiple systems. Too often outdated technology slows down and frustrates staff.”

True NHS Single Sign On from Isosec

As a provider of a whole range of identity management solutions all purpose built for the NHS, Isosec welcome this focus on national improvement in point of care access to information. Michael Latimer, CEO of Isosec, commented “At Isosec, we see the challenge of multiple system login day in day out with our NHS customers. NHS staff want instant access to information they need for what they need to focus on – providing patient care with more informed decision making.

Our SSO solution – part of our Web Authentication platform – is the only NHS purpose-built cloud based service on the market that reduces the burden of multiple logins, saving our customers valuable minutes each time they need to log in. We welcome the opportunity to drive forward this national initiative by providing even more Trusts with our existing proven technology to resolve this challenge.”

The infrastructure challenges ahead

NHS Single login may be one of the ‘basic’ needs for NHS Staff login, but as with all changes to NHS systems, the challenge is different for each Trust, as every infrastructure is different. Marc Poulaud, CTO of Isosec, commented “We work with Trusts all over England and we see the complexities of technical infrastructure that can often stall the progress of seemingly ‘simple’ systems such as Single Sign On. Many Trusts are faced with the challenge of old infrastructure which may actually be hindered by simply implementing new SSO technology on on to old infrastructure.

The Isosec solution is cloud based and integrates with a Trust’s Active Directory which means adoption is much simpler and obviates the need for costly hardware refreshes. When combined with our Virtual Smartcard solution,  it removes the need for a physical card and thus reduces risk and frees up time and resource. Additionally, our Password Reset solution allows users to reset their own passwords without needing to call the IT service desk – we offer a full Web Authentication Service purpose built for the NHS.”

Cloud based NHS identity management – the future of NHS Staff login

Isosec are innovators in the NHS authentication space and work with over 75 NHS Trusts in England; for nearly two decades we have worked with NHS smartcard technology, optimising along the way with smarter solutions and processes. Latimer says “providing cloud based Web Authentication Service for full management of NHS identity and login means a streamlined consumer grade service for users, management and also the NHS financial bottom line by freeing up resources and time for a better all round experience. Our full password management service will be the next step in our journey to NHS Trusts achieving better NHS identity and login.  We’re proud to be part of delivering the future of NHS single login with secure and instant cloud-based authentication.”
